Mezcal is an alcohol made from roasted agave plants. Tequila is technically a type of mezcal since it is also made of agave, but when you buy liquor labeled specifically as mezcal it has a smoky flavor from the roasting. I like the extra smoky element it adds to drinks.
We used to have a huge agave plant in the yard at our first house we bought together as a married couple. It was neat, but it had these super sharp spikes on the ends of all the leaves. Once we had kids and they were running around the yard, we decided to remove it. Something we learned from that experience, agave sap is super irritating to the skin and can cause a bad rash. Just in case you were going to hack one up like my husband did. 🙂 We will stick to drinking it.
This is a pretty straight forward margarita recipe using mezcal instead of regular tequila. I used a combo of oranges, lemons and limes but you can sub out any of those. If you don’t use the orange you will need to add a bit more sweetener though. These are super fresh and delicious! Hope you try them.
Mezcal Margaritas
Ingredients
- 2 oz mezcal
- 2 oz fresh orange juice
- 1 oz fresh lemon juice
- 1 oz fresh lime juice
- 2 tsp triple sec or other orange liqueur or simple syrup
- dash of orange bitters
- pinch of salt
Instructions
- Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and shake until cold. Serve with the ice. You can also do a salt rim if you like, but I prefer to add the salt to the drink itself.
