Ingredients

  • 2 lbs 80/20 ground beef
  • 1 1 oz envelope dry onion soup mix
  • 1 1 oz packet Au Jus mix
  • 1/2 cup Italian breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk or water
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 2 cans cream of mushroom soup
  • 1-2 cups water depending on cooking method
  • mashed potatoes for serving

Instructions

  • If you are using your oven, set it to 300 degrees and use an oven safe pan with lid to fry the patties. If using your crock pot, set on low or high depending on the time you will leave it cooking. If using an instapot, use the saute setting to sear the burgers and then use the slow cooker function.
  • In a large bowl, mix together gently the ground beef, onion soup mix, bread crumbs and 1/4 cup milk or water. You do not need to add salt as the recipe is already salty enough. For into 8 patties, or more if you want smaller ones.
  • Heat the oil in your pan and brown the burgers on both sides. In a bowl, whisk together the soup, au jus mix and 1 cup water for slow cooker, 2 cups if using the oven. You may need to adjust this some. You want a thick gravy consistency, but not so thick it burns or dries out.
  • Cover patties in the gravy and cook for 4-5 hours on low in crock pot or 1.5-2 hours in the oven. Check the consistency of the gravy once or twice and add a little water if it is getting too dried out. Serve over mashed potatoes and try to eat just one patty.
