Yum, just looking at the picture of this sandwich, I want to eat it again. 🙂 This is a simple and quick to make meal, but so satisfying. Good bread is key for any sandwich. I used homemade German style seeded bread I had made on the weekend, but you can grab a fresh loaf from any grocery store if you don’t like or have time to make bread.
I love the combination of the smokiness of the turkey, the sharpness of the cheddar and the slightly sweetness and crunch the apple adds. It might sound weird to put apple on a sandwich, but trust me, it is really good.
I kept the toppings fairly simple here, just some crisp romaine and sliced red onion. I used whole grain mustard as well as mayo on the bread. This would make a great make ahead packed sandwich too for a picnic or work lunch. Just make sure to place the apple slices between the turkey and lettuce so they don’t make the bread or cheese soggy.
We had a simple arugula salad with balsamic dressing on the side, but chips would be great too. I ended up drizzling some extra balsamic dressing on my sandwich while eating it, which was extra delicious, so I’d recommend that too.
