Quick Weeknight Carne Asada Style Tacos

Aren’t tacos an amazing food? There are so many variations and they are all SO good. I love them all, but true Mexican style tacos are the favorite in my house. If you have time to make my slightly more time consuming, closer to authentic carne asada, please do. For weeknights when you need to get dinner done quick though, this recipe works and tastes great.

The flank steak here is cut into bite size pieces so even with a brief marinating time, it still has tons of flavor and it cooks in just 5 minutes. I go really simple with these and just serve with warmed corn tortillas, onion and cilantro chopped with a little lime juice, and some bottled salsa. That all helps keep this meal super quick. I absolutely love the Herdez taqueria line of salsa from the grocery store or amazon. These are so good and save you the trouble of making from scratch salsa. We have tried all the flavors and love them all but the verde and roja are my favorites.

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 5 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes
Course Lunch, Main Course
Servings 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 1.5-2 lbs flank steak trimmed and cut into bite sized pieces
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 2 tbsp lime juice
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp chipotle chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp regular chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp salt
  • warmed corn tortillas to serve
  • chopped cilantro and onion to serve
  • lime juice to serve
  • salsa to serve

Instructions

  • Combine the marinade ingredients in a bowl and add the chopped steak. Toss well and marinate for 15 minutes up to 3 hours. When ready to cook, heat a little oil in a skillet until smoking over high heat.
  • Add the steak and do not move it. Allow it to fully sear on one side before you stir. Stir and sear a bit more. You can leave the steak medium rare, or if you prefer you can cook it a bit longer. Taste it and add salt if needed.
  • Warm corn tortillas by heating a skillet over medium high heat and then add a few tortillas at a time until they are slightly charred and warm. Move to a plate with a towel covering it until ready to eat.
  • Mix the chopped onion and cilantro with a pinch of salt and the juice of a lime. Mix well. Serve on the side along with the salsa.
