Cheeseburger tater tot casserole is the ultimate comfort food. I know casseroles generally get a bad rap but not this one. It is a delicious mashup of a cheeseburger filling and crispy tater tots in a creamy, cheesy dish.
This hearty casserole starts with seasoned ground beef and onions. The beef is then mixed with a rich, savory sauce made from ketchup, mustard, relish and a touch of Worcestershire. A layer of cheese sauce ties it all together before being topped with shredded cheese and crispy, golden tater tots.
Every bite is packed with the flavors of a juicy cheeseburger, with the crispy crunch of tots making it even better. Perfect for weeknight dinners or potlucks. For an extra burger-style twist, top it with pickles, bacon, or even a drizzle of bbq sauce before serving!
Try a couple of my other really good casseroles too – Cheddar Broccoli Chicken Casserole or Chicken Rice-a-Roni Casserole (one of my favorites).

Cheeseburger Tater Tot Casserole
Ingredients
- 1 lb lean ground beef
- 1/3 cup diced onion
- 2/3 cup ketchup
- 2 tbsp yellow mustard
- 2 tbsp dill relish
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- fresh black pepper
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp flour
- 1 1/2 cup milk
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- frozen tater tots
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 and grease a deep pie plate or a 9×13 pan. In a skillet over medium heat, heat a tbsp of oil oil. Add the onion and ground beef. Stir, breaking up the meat. Sprinkle the meat with the salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic powder.
- Cook until the meat is full cooked, then add the ketchup, mustard, relish and Worcestershire sauce. Put this meat mixture into your baking dish.
- Rinse the skillet and put it back over medium heat. Add the butter and allow it to melt. Whisk in the flour and cook for a minute. Slowly whisk in the milk to avoid lumps. Cook, whisking, until the sauce thickens. Remove from the heat and slowly mix in 1 1/2 cups of the shredded cheese and season the sauce with salt and pepper.
- Pour this sauce over the meat mixture. Top this with the 1/2 cup shredded cheese you have left and then fully cover the top with frozen tater tots. Place into the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, until it is bubbly and the tater tots are nice and crispy on top. Cool 5 minutes before serving. Try not to eat 2 helpings. 🙂
