Grapefruit Basil Greyhound

Grapefruit basil greyhound

I bought some grapefruit in a big bag this week. I love the freshness of grapefruit in a cocktail so I looked around online for something interesting to make with it. This recipe comes from the Swift website.

This cocktail was apparently named a Greyhound because it was popular in the 40s in the restaurants that were in Greyhound bus stations. Sounds pretty swanky to me!

Gin or vodka both work in this drink. I had a huge bottle of vodka, so I used that. Fresh grapefruit juice really makes a world of difference compared to the jar stuff. A lot of grocery stores now carry refrigerated fresh juice and I think that would work too. I had some basil still alive in the garden to use for this. I’m not sure it would be worth it to buy a bunch just for this, so maybe a good drink to pair with a dish featuring basil.

To make this cocktail, simply finely chop the basil, combine everything but the water in a cocktail shaker and shake until cold. Serve over ice and top with seltzer or sparkling water.
