Japanese Style Hot Dogs

This Japanese twist on hot dogs was super delicious and different than any other hot dog I have eaten. They are topped with fried onions bathed in homemade teriyaki sauce (so much easier to make than you’d think it is), then a nice drizzle of Kewpie mayo, which is a rich, thick Japanese mayo with a lot of umami which you can buy here. It goes so well on these, and makes great spicy mayo or any kind of dipping sauce. If you don’t want to get Kewpie, you can use regular mayo.

Finally, they are covered in a bunch of chopped scallions and a sprinkle of furikake, which is a Japanese rice sprinkle mix usually served on rice. There are many flavors of furikake and most would work fine on these. I have linked here to the one which would be great on these. These were quick to make and a really interesting and tasty dinner.

Ingredients

For the teriyaki sauce:

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp mirin optional
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1 tsp cornstarch

For the onions:

  • 2 large red onions
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • salt and pepper

For the hot dogs:

  • 8 hot dog buns
  • 8 all beef hot dogs
  • Kewpie mayo drizzle
  • sliced scallions
  • furikake

Instructions

  • In a small sauce pan, combine the sauce ingredients other than the cornstarch and water. Mix the cornstarch and water in a small dish. Heat the sauce mixture over medium low heat, stirring until it comes to a boil. Add the cornstarch mix and whisk until thickened. Remove from heat.
  • In a skillet, heat the oil over medium high heat and add the onions with a pinch of salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 8-10 minutes then add some of teriyaki sauce to coat the onions and stir well. Remove from heat.
  • Heat the hot dogs either by boiling them or pan frying them. If you would like toasted buns, toast in a skillet or the broiler. Place a hot dog in each bun, top with onions and finish with mayo, scallions and a sprinkle of furikake.
