Slow Cooked Asian Ribs (In the Oven)

Slow Cooked Asian Ribs

Making ribs in the oven is the most low effort way to make super tender ribs. These slow cooked Asian ribs take 5 minutes to prep with a simple rub. Then they are baked at a low temp wrapped in foil for hours. In the last stretch of cooking, they are brushed with a really tasty Asian inspired sauce full of ginger and garlic which caramelizes them nicely.

You could also cook these on the bbq using more traditional rib techniques if you like. I love the oven method for a busy day when I don’t have time to do much. Served with rice and simple cucumber salad, this meal was amazingly low effort.

If you want to make it even more simple, you could buy a bottled Asian bbq sauce. The one included here takes almost no time though (other than chopping some ginger and garlic) and it is SO good. The rub for these does use Chinese 5 spice powder and I recommend including that because it gives a really unique and interesting flavor to these.

Ingredients

  • 2.5 lbs ribs
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp Chinese 5 spice powder
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp white pepper

For the sauce:

  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 10 garlic cloves minced
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh ginger
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/3 cup rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • red pepper flakes to taste

Instructions

  • Heat the oven to 300 degrees. Mix the spices for the dry rub together well. Line a sheet pan with foil. Rub the dry rub into the ribs well and wrap tightly in more foil.
  • Place into the oven and bake for 3 hours or so. I prefer my ribs fully tender and meat falling off the bones. You can adjust the time if you like them more firm.
  • For the sauce, heat the sesame oil over medium heat in a sauce pan and add the ginger and garlic. Cook for a minute, then add the rest of the ingredients. Stir well, bring a simmer and simmer for a few minutes until thickened up a bit.
  • In the last 15-20 minutes, open the foil on the ribs and brush them with the glaze. Don't close the foil back up. Continue baking and glazing every few minutes until the glaze is getting caramelized. You can turn on the broiler to speed this up if you like, just make sure not to burn the glaze too much. Serve with rice.
